A charity based in Cheam, at the borders on London and Surrey, appointed Fusion Office Design to partner on their office refurbishment. Working to a tight budget due to the nature of the business, as well as accommodating staff working on site during renovations, Fusion successfully modernised the dated office, with a focus on brand identity and ensuring acoustics were not compromised with the new open plan layout.

Fusion Office Design were appointed to deliver a complete office refurbishment for a charity based on the Surrey/London border.

The clear brief for this charity office refurbishment included transforming an underperforming workspace into a more functional, collaborative and welcoming environment, while working within a tightly controlled budget due to the nature of the business. The project was delivered within a 7-week timeframe.

As with many charity sector projects, value for money was paramount. Every design and construction decision needed to prove it’s worth in the overall scheme, with the Fusion team helping the client to understand where budget should be allocated for maximum impact, and where things could be scaled back.

The existing layout lacked flow and presence. The kitchen was positioned as a small, enclosed galley space in the corner of the office, disconnected from the rest of the team and therefore underutilised. Improving the kitchen space to make it a key hub for the office was vital. Meeting space was limited, making internal collaboration difficult.

Opening the space up to improve light and connectivity introduced another challenge: acoustics. With four new meeting rooms and a more open-plan working environment, speech transfer and noise control were key considerations for allocation of budget. Ensuring the office refurbishment not only looked good, but functioned well, was an important part of the overall project.

The charity needed to remain operational during much of the programme, requiring careful planning and phasing, as well as flexibility from our team.

 

From Disconnected Spaces to a Cohesive Layout

We restructured the layout to create four well-proportioned meeting rooms positioned to balance accessibility with acoustic separation. High-performance acoustic partitions and door sets were specified to reduce sound transmission between rooms, while acoustic treatments and soft finishes were introduced across the open-plan areas.

The kitchen was relocated and significantly enlarged, transforming it from a hidden galley into a central breakout hub. By making it more prominent and visually inviting, the space now encourages informal interaction and team connection, which was previously lacking.

The entrance area was redesigned to create a stronger first impression. Integrated branding elements, coordinated finishes and improved lighting now give visitors an immediate sense of identity and professionalism.

The building’s solid concrete floors presented technical constraints. To achieve the clean, streamlined aesthetic the client wanted, all new electrical routes had to be chased into the slab rather than surface mounted. This required careful coordination and phasing, with flexibility from the Fusion team, but ensured a streamlined, high-quality finish with no visible trunking which also futureproofed the office.

The works were phased to allow staff to remain in occupation wherever possible, minimising downtime and maintaining business continuity.
